Status: In Progress
Originally from Durban, this brave, young, professional couple purchased a traditional family home on a large stand looking to renovate.
The property presented some design challenges. The home was, badly altered and added to over the years, presenting a compartmentalized interior experience, and under-utilized garden. The front door carried little presence, leaving visitors lost and underwhelmed on arrival, with the kitchen being isolated from living spaces, and outdated along with the bathrooms.
The design solution comprises of a major update of interior and exterior space, to create a contemporary home suited to entertaining. The open plan Living, Kitchen, Dining and Family room spaces open out onto a large, Covered Patio, pool and seating area to the North, and covered deck connected to a reinvigorated Boma to the South. By doing this, both under-utilized, established garden spaces are reactivated, with the garden formalized and existing trees respected and retained. Four generous, on-suite bedrooms connected by a central passage (interior) and canopies (exterior) make up the remaining interior floor space, removed from the main entertainment areas to ensure privacy. Being in a prime location, the staff accommodation has been redesigned as a lettable studio space with its own access and private outdoor space.
The updated, contemporary home presents a space ideal for entertaining, whilst maintaining privacy and re-energising existing garden spaces.
