Acacia Road Reno: A New Life for a Forgotten Home
When we first arrived on site late one December afternoon, what greeted us was not a quaint fixer-upper with charming potential – but a gutted, crumbling building that looked like it had given up long before we had even stepped foot inside. This wasn’t just a renovation project; this was a rescue mission.
Our clients, experienced renovators themselves, had already begun the process with ambition and enthusiasm. Having purchased the property with every intention of transforming it into their forever home, they eagerly started gutting the interiors. But midway through, reality set in; this was a bigger task than anticipated, and they needed guidance to turn their dream into a functional, beautiful, modern family home. That’s when they reached out to meik.
The scale of decay was daunting. Exposed brick, decaying timber beams, and fractured foundations made the initial walk-through a sobering experience. Years of neglect had taken a toll on the bones of the building, and it was evident that any transformation would require a complete overhaul. Yet, within this challenge lay potential – a large plot with mature trees, a great location, and a unique footprint that, if approached creatively, could yield a truly remarkable family home.
The Vision Behind Acacia Road Reno: From Chaos to Cohesion
The client’s dream was clear: take what remained of this disjointed structure and transform it into a modern, cohesive, and inviting home that could meet the evolving needs of a dynamic family. It needed to flow better, make smarter use of space, and reconnect meaningfully to the generous garden that the existing structure had all but ignored.
The brief was ambitious, but we love a challenge. Our clients didn’t just want cosmetic changes; they wanted a fundamental transformation of how the home functioned, felt, and related to its surroundings.
To get there, we needed to dig deep into what mattered most to this family, not just in terms of design, but also in values. Sustainability, longevity, and day-to-day comfort were key. We explored passive cooling strategies, natural light optimisation, and layout adjustments that would future-proof the home as the family’s needs evolved. The client wanted a warm, welcoming space that felt lived-in from day one, but also one that could gracefully support multiple generations living under one roof.
Designing the Acacia Road Reno: From Ruins to Refined Living
We began where any sensible renovation project should, with the structure. Our first step was to assess what we were working with. Following an initial consultation, we brought in a structural engineer to inspect the remaining roof and foundations. Once we knew what could be kept and what needed to go, we proceeded with our comprehensive briefing process.
This in-depth phase allowed us to fully understand the family’s needs, lifestyle habits, and long-term goals, all within the constraints (and opportunities!) of working with an existing footprint.
The final design was a full reimagination of the home. A new carport and welcoming lobby were added to improve the arrival experience and create a clearer sense of entry. The internal spaces were reconfigured to support both intimate family life and large family gatherings. Living areas now include a generous lounge, an expansive dining room, and a TV space, each offering distinct zones for family members to gather, relax, and entertain.
We also took care to future-proof the home. Thoughtful material choices, such as engineered timber flooring and robust natural stone countertops, help ensure durability. We considered storage from the start, adding custom cabinetry, hidden nooks, and built-in shelving that balances aesthetics with functionality.
Acacia Road Reno: A Home Built Around Connection and Comfort
One of the central challenges of Acacia Road Reno was improving flow both within the home itself and between the interior and exterior. We designed a new, spacious kitchen that connects seamlessly to a private courtyard garden and a bright internal atrium, allowing natural light to flood into the heart of the home. In addition to the main kitchen, we included a compact second kitchen dedicated to cooking particularly spicy dishes, allowing for culinary variety without lingering aromas.
The existing swimming pool was transformed from a large kidney-shaped pool to a smaller rectangular pool, complementing the new layout and connecting naturally to the house via newly designed stairs. To elevate outdoor living further, we designed a brand-new pool house complete with an outdoor kitchen, ideal for summer entertaining, casual family dinners, or weekend braais.
Sleeping quarters were thoughtfully reimagined, too. All bedrooms were reconfigured to be en-suite and positioned to take advantage of views and access to the garden. An existing double garage was cleverly repurposed into a spacious and accessible suite for an elderly parent, while a private guest wing was created on the western side of the house.
Acacia Road Reno: Modern Needs, Smart Solutions
The evolving demands of modern family life were top of mind throughout this project. With flexible working becoming a permanent reality, the clients requested not one, but two home offices. A large, light-filled office with garden views was placed off the lounge, while a smaller, private workspace was tucked off the main bedroom suite, offering both productivity and privacy.
This was not a simple renovation. It was a complex, multi-layered design challenge that pushed us to be creative, thoughtful, and resourceful. But we loved every minute of it. The finished product is a stylish, functional, and inviting home that meets the client’s needs now and into the future.
Energy efficiency also came to the fore. We worked closely with consultants to optimise thermal performance and reduce long-term utility costs. High-performance glazing was specified for windows and doors, and solar panels with battery backup were added for increased resilience. Water-saving fixtures and rainwater harvesting were also introduced, bringing together beauty, efficiency, and sustainability in a seamless whole.
